2011 Rome Planning

I started to plan my 2011 main vacation back in December. My partner and I decided to accept an invitation from a friend in Rome for an Ordination ceremony. This would require us to be in Rome in mid June.

Let the Aeroplan redemption games begin!

I won't bore you with the research that needed to happen in using Aeroplan miles from the West Coast of North America. You can find out how to do it on line through many other sources. The final booking was YVR to LAX to MUC to FCO. Then returning FRA to Den to YVR. We were able to book first class on Lufthansa for the over the Altantic parts of the journey! How fortunate.

Fast forward to the end of the first week of February. My partner started a new job and we were unsure about a three week vacation for Rome so we only booked a two week trip. Now that it is February and the new job has started a three week trip is possible.

During the time we booked the two week trip and the time a three week trip became possible I had been monitoring award seat flights in first for possible dates. Wouldn't you know it, by the time I went to look for flights they were all gone for our dates!! Argh.

Several months ago I came across an entry in a travel blog about a wacky journey to Asia and Europe for 120,000 Aeroplan miles.  So I began to think.....What if?

On Saturday morning I quickly did some flight research and came up with a route to Rome through Asia. I immediately called Aeroplan and was able to change the trip.

So now.....
YVR to SFO overnight
SFO to PKK overnight
PKK TO MUC overnight (to avoid getting into Rome until 11:30PM)
MUC to FCO
Open Jaw for 12 Days Here
DUS to MUC to NRT
A Week Here
NRT to YVR

This worked out to 5 countries in the trip. Thankfully all in the pointy end of the plane.

Now the real planning begins! Where to stay in Beijing? Munich? Tokyo? and what to see in Japan?

Thankfully there is Lonely Planet to the rescue:
Beijing
Tokyo
Rome
Italy

and just for kicks
24 Great Walks in Rome

Advise gratefully accepted!

Let the games begin!
